Exceptionally high protection
Lownethwaite WTW run by C2C treats river water from the Yorkshire Dales. Sheep grazing in the catchment means that Cryptosporidium is present in the raw water. Grontmij undertook design at Lownethwaite WTW in Yorkshire to provide an exceptionally high level of protection from Cryptosporidium.
Optimising processes to maximise removal
The first line of defence was to optimise the coagulation, clarification and filtration stages to maximise removal in the treatment process. Unlike most British water treatment works additional protection was provided by an ultraviolet treatment system. This was specified to exceed the Cryptosporidium inactivation criteria set by the USEPA.
