Huddersfield Waste Water Treatment Works

Compliance with Freshwater Fisheries Directive

Improvements to Yorkshire Water’s existing works were required to ensure compliance with more onerous effluent discharge consent standards imposed under the Freshwater Fisheries Directive (FFD).

This project impacts on the most complex waste water treatment works in Yorkshire. Two large catchments (Huddersfield and Brighouse) are served by treatment works spread over six separate sites. Around 30% of the flow and load comprises trade effluent from the local chemical and textile industries. Two of the existing sites are filter bed works which are at risk of consent failure due to overloading. In addition, due to the FFD, a new, tighter consent comes into force in March 2010 which will impose a much lower ammonia standard.

Cleaner water and environment

Morgan Est and Grontmij were appointed in December 2007 to undertake a design and build contract to provide a new activated sludge plant to replace the two existing filter bed works. The flow to full treatment for the plant is 1372 l/s, serving a population equivalent of 148,000.
