New River Control Philosophy
New River Control Philosophy
Water losses
The river in question is man-made and has supplied London with fresh water from Hertfordshire since 1613. It has very little automation and monitoring, and suffers from water losses in the region of 10 Ml/d. When considered against the capital cost for building new boreholes, this can be considered a major loss. In addition, poor central monitoring has led to prosecution due to spillages in residential areas and resultant flooding.
Facilitating objective decision-making
Monitoring and control of major and minor control structures reduces operational costs significantly. To assist the client, Grontmij assessed all the options and gave the client clear direction on which option would give the most benefit. Close co-operation with operations, management and the Thames Water Project Manager led to comprehensive documentation that is now in a position to allow Thames Water to make an objective decision on the way forward for capital spend on the new river system.
