Active Traffic Management

Managed Motorways

Managed Motorways

An authority on mananged motorways

The world of traffic and transportation becomes more complex every day. Daily congestion, pollution and incidents are commonplace. Managed motorways are a pro-active method of influencing driver behaviour, optimising road capacity, increase the efficiency of traffic flow and improving road safety. Through managed motorways, Grontmij has played an important role in reducing congestions, reducing delays and optimising traffic information.

Comprehensive service offering

Grontmij has a long term experience in all levels of managed motorways. This ranges from the development of future managed motorways policies for road authorities through to the design, engineering and staff training for a motorway traffic management system.

Grontmij can work across disciplines and all project stages to deliver a substantial contribution to the realisation of plans and ideas. We are able to offer our clients the latest state of the art knowledge in managed motorways, proven experience and high standard consultancy services. We have experience with design, feasibility, development, engineering, implementation and evaluation of different measures, systems, and processes.

Unique selling points

Grontmij has several unique selling points with managed motorways. We created the national guidelines for implementation of the MTM-system in the Netherlands. We train operational staff and we develop new features for the system.

Simulation models

We often use simulation models to predict future traffic volumes. This is both on a national scale, but also on a micro level. We are dealers for the simulation software programmes of Cube and Paramics.

Incident management

We have unique experience and knowledge on incident management. We develop, implement, train and maintain incident management programmes for most of the Dutch road authorities. We have achieved a high standard in designing, development, programming and maintenance of traffic lights and traffic systems like park and ride systems, ramp metering or variable message signs.

Evaluation studies

Lots of new measures in the field of managed motorways have to be evaluated for dedicated successes. Over the years we have done a large number of traffic surveys and evaluation studies, giving us great experience with complex data analysis. As a consequence we have a wealth of knowledge of the measures and systems to enable us to find the best solutions suited to individual client needs.

Peakhour lanes

In the Netherlands, Grontmij has developed several examples and constructions of hard shoulder running (or use of peakhour lanes), evaluated them and afterwards written the national guidelines for their use.

Traffic control centres

National and regional traffic control centres play a central role in operating managed motorways systems. We aid this by facilitating policy development, system development and organisational advices within the traffic control centres. Our extensive experience includes acting as technical advisor to the Highways Agency on the National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC) since 1997.
