At the time of award in March 2004, this was the largest ECI contract awarded by the Highways Agency. It will provide a dual three lane motorway over a length of 40km to replace the existing dual carriageway trunk road, which will be partially retained to meet the requirements of local and non-motorway traffic. 

Integrated designer

Grontmij is undertaking 50% of the design related work across all disciplines, as contractor’s designer, through the feasibility, statutory process and detailed design phases. The design has been developed in an integrated manner, to maximise utilisation of existing infrastructure and ensure buildability, whilst maintaining traffic flows during construction.

Motorway communications

Grontmij has led the work in the motorway communications, traffic and economics and pavement disciplines. We successfully identified ways of varying gantry spacing to achieve cost savings, based on intervisibility criteria, and have undertaken on site testing of the existing pavement to allow residual life assessments to be made and efficient overlay designs to be delivered.
