Grontmij was invited by the Lagan-Ferrovial Contractors Joint Venture (LF CJV) to provide tender design services on scheme 3 of the Northern Ireland Design Build Finance and Operate Package 2 (DBFO2).

The scheme

Scheme 3 consisted of approximately 20km of mainline dual two lane all purpose carriageway with 11 side road / accommodation works structures, seven compact grade separated junctions and a major structure over an environmentally sensitive area, Johnson’s Glen. In addition, to the mainline there were two further single carriageway sections each approximately 3.5km long with climbing lanes.

Providing tender and design services

Grontmij provided full tender design services with additional Best And Final Offer stage (BAFO) support. Completion of the process took more than two years and resulted in the LF CJV being awarded the contract. Subsequently Grontmij provided detailed design services for scheme 3B.

Grontmij also undertook the detailed geometric design of the mainline, side roads and accommodation works tracks. The detailed design of the drainage elements, structures and the other associated elements such as safety barriers, kerbing, traffic signs and road marking were also undertaken.
