This Transport Scotland project comprised rehabilitation and widening of 8.5km of existing dual carriageway, which forms part of the main arterial route between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Necessary repairs to the existing highway structures, provision of driver information equipment and grouting of former mineworkings were also included in the project.

Options appraisal

Grontmij led the project from assessment of options to completion of construction. We assessed the existing A8 in terms of condition, problems with capacity and safety and the buildability of scheme options that would enable the high traffic throughput to be maintained.

Saltaire commendation

The tender documents for the Design and Build competition were evolved from the standard model due to the complexities of the large maintenance scheme. The construction stage of the project passed without recurrent disruption, demonstrating that the careful planning undertaken had been effective. Following opening to traffic in 2004, a Saltire commendation for excellence was presented to the project team for the construction planning and successful implementation of the scheme.
