Quartet of awards for Albrighton flood alleviation scheme
An innovative new tunnel and water system, designed by Grontmij and built by civil engineering specialists Barhale Construction, has won the ICE West Midlands Communication Award, which acknowledges excellence in communication, PR and media activity associated with a project.
This latest award seals a quartet of recognition for the scheme, which has previously won first prize for new installation of a large project for at the UK Society of Trenchless Technology Awards, a gold at the Severn Trent Water Community awards and a Bronze National Site Considerate Constructors Award.
Unique tunnel design
The project was put in place in the village of Albrighton in Shropshire as part of an £8 million flood alleviation scheme, funded by Severn Trent Water. The innovative design, unique because it is installed on a curve, enabled the delivery of an online solution minimising disruption around the local built up area.
The potential impact of an 18-month construction period on the local residents and businesses was of great concern to the local MP, Local Authority and the Traders’ Association. Albrighton was recognised with this most recent award as a result of the team’s efforts to engage the community in the project from start to completion.
Extensive community engagement
The project team’s approach centred on community engagement, including community presentations and a drop in centre, allowing people to learn about the scheme and raise any concerns. This helped forge excellent relations within the local community and resulted in the local Parish Council organising a supper party to express their thanks to the whole team.
Scott Aitken, Director of Water at Grontmij, said: “We are delighted to receive the Communication Award. It is the third in a row that the team have won for the project in Albrighton, reflecting the dedication everyone has given to the scheme.
“The Albrighton project is further independent recognition of how Grontmij and its partner Barhale were able to employ best practice to successfully deliver solutions to challenging assignments.”
