7 Jul 2010 | Major Medical Research & Teaching Facilities Innovations

The National University of Ireland, in Galway, has undertaken a major new project to develop and enhance the medical, arts and biosciences research facilities on their Galway campus.

The ambitious 21 month rapid design and construction programme will see three new buildings added to the Galway campus providing over 18,200m2 of state of the art research space. The project has now completed the design stage and partially commenced the construction phase on 2nd June, on time and on budget.

Roger Preston & Partners has been involved since the inception of the project and we have designed a high quality scheme which meets all of the client’s environmental and sustainability requirements. This has been achieved by incorporating sustainable technology which includes a highly efficient combined heating, cooling and power (CHP) engine with desiccant cooling which will dramatically reduce the air conditioning requirements throughout the development; rainwater harvesting will also add to project’s green credentials.

The three new buildings are: The Science Research Building which is nearly 8,000m2 of complex laboratory space (including biological safety cabinets and fume cupboards), Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Research Building a 5,500m2 open plan academic space, a Translational Research Facility and a Clinical Research Facility (5,000m2) attached to UCHG.

In addition to M&E and environmental duties, Roger Preston & Partners has been charged with a project wide AV and networks services strategy and bespoke vertical transportation strategy.
