Decontamination and dismantling

The main objective of this project was to allow Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant B9.1
to perform decontamination and dismantling activities on the redundant systems in Unit 1 Turbine Hall at the earliest opportunity.

Scope

There were around 2000 items of main and auxiliary equipment that needed to be dismantled, decontaminated, size reduced, categorised, packaged and sentenced to an appropriate waste stream. 

The work to be carried out by the contractor initially involved development of a strategy for decontaminating and dismantling equipment within Unit 1 Turbine Hall.


Responsibilities

Grontmij was responsible for:
The development of the safety justification report
The development of the environmental impact assessment
The development of the general data set for waste disposal plan
The successful application of both HAZOP and HAZAN techniques in support of the above tasks was vital in ensuring highest achievable levels of confidence in the safety integrity of the final design philosophy and safety justification there of.
