Major replacement of existing plant
Grontmij was commissioned to provide design and consultancy services for the major refurbishment of the Knauf Insulation St Helens Plant. The plant occupies an area of 17 Hectares with some 40,000m2 of production and warehousing facilities.
The refurbishment works comprised the replacement and provision of new process plant within the existing insulation production factory. Grontmij was responsible for the structural and civil engineering elements of the project.
Design and procurement
The works included the design and procurement of 30 separate elements within the overall project and duties included the following:
• Piled foundations for a 40m tall silo support building on made ground containing large obstructions within an area of former intensive coal mining activity.
• Structural investigations and assessments of existing structures to accommodate increased loadings.
• Significant structural alterations of existing structures and buildings.
• New storage buildings.
• 3000m2 hardstanding and drainage.
• Contract administration for each element of the works.
• Site supervision. Extensive involvement of other parties
Grontmij worked closely with the client and suppliers as a part of the team to ensure the project requirements were identified, co-ordinated and delivered on time and within budget.
